Dorn
Veterans Administration Hospital (VAH), the Palmetto Health Eye
Center (PHEC), as well as the faculty private practice clinics.
The department continues to undergo exciting changes which will
enhance the clinical, surgical and research experience of our residents.
The clinical and surgical experience of our residency program involves
all of the clinical sites. The residents begin their surgical experience
on the pediatric ophthalmology subspecialty rotation in their first
year, and training in intraocular surgery commences during their
second year. In contrast to many other training programs dependent
on resident-to-resident teaching, the majority of our resident clinics
are staffed by experienced part-time and full-time Department faculty,
and all procedures are attended by faculty members.
The didactic curriculum is complemented by several sessions throughout
the week, with Friday afternoons set aside for lectures covering
the American Academy of Ophthalmology Basic and Clinical Science
Course. In addition, Grand Rounds case presentations and morbidity
and mortality conferences are also held during this protected educational
time. There is a weekly OKAP review designed to cover the entire
BCSC series, and bi-monthly fluorescein angiography conferences,
along with weekly subspecialty and case management rounds, are scheduled
to complement the core lecture series. Residents are also provided
the opportunity to participate in the Wills Annual Ophthalmology
Review Course in their second year.
Clinical and basic science research opportunities have been integrated
into the first and second year schedules, allowing for the residents
the opportunity to work with our faculty in Vision Research. It
is anticipated that, upon completion, these research projects can
be submitted for presentation at national meetings such as ARVO
and the AAO Annual Meeting.
The strength of this program lies in the camaraderie and fellowship
amongst the residents, as well as the collegial relationship with
the faculty. Our residents are not just young trainees; rather,
they are viewed as junior colleagues. The department looks to recruit
outstanding individuals who are highly motivated about Ophthalmology
and work well in a team setting. We hope to instill in our residents
a sense of pride in their training and abilities, and ultimately
the program here at USC-Columbia. We welcome you to explore the
details about our residency program.
