3rd
Year
Surgical evaluation and management of patients as well as honing
surgical skill is the focus of the third year of residency. Due
to local geography and the inherent nature of the VAH and PHEC,
there is abundant surgical pathology including cataracts, glaucoma,
and retinal disease. The goal of the third year is to provide an
intensive surgical experience such that the resident may enter practice
upon completion of residency and be quite comfortable caring for
complex cataract extractions and glaucoma cases. Additionally, a
four month retina rotation is provided allowing for mastery of posterior
segment examination skills including contact lens examination and
scleral depression. The resident on the Retina rotation will be
responsible for providing cases for Fluorescein Angiography (FA)
Conference, attending ROP rounds in the NICU, and attending retinal
surgical cases. Depending on the aptitude and desire of the resident,
basic retinal surgical skills may be transferred. Greater responsibility
is placed on the 3rd year resident to educate junior residents in
the clinical and surgical milieu as well as during resident driven
didactic sessions. Depending on the aptitude and desire of the resident,
