2nd Year

The second year resident will continue with continuity clinics, however, increased exposure to subspecialty services is stressed. Rotations in Cornea/Glaucoma, Oculoplastics/Neuro, and VAH are equally divided into four month blocks. An introduction to intraocular surgery including cataract extraction (extracapsular and phacoemulsification techniques), glaucoma filtering procedures, and retinal lasers will occur as the resident gains experience, confidence, and skill. The second year residents also take on an increasing responsibility in 1st year resident education. The Consult Service cares for those patients in the Emergency Room and Inpatient settings at both the VAH and Palmetto Health Richland (PHR) Hospital. During the spring of second year, the residents attend the Wills Eye OKAP review course. Following a six-week period in which call is shadowed with a 1st year resident, primary call will be shared equally between the 1st and 2nd year residents.
